Why do the old lines block so easily?

Three things work on these pipes at once:

Fractured earthenware

Drainage laid when this was a coal township runs in short clay segments, and age cracks them at the joints.

Roots from mature trees

Established gardens push fine roots into every crack, and inside the pipe they spread into a tangled mass that traps paper and everything behind it.

Grease off the dining strip

Restaurant kitchens flush fat through their lines every service, and each hardened layer narrows the bore week after week.

A line facing one of these can usually keep going. A line facing two at once tends to let you know on a weekend.

How we get a blocked drain moving

The method runs the same way every time, whatever is down the pipe:

  1. 1

    Find it

The CCTV camera goes down first, so we clear the actual fault instead of the nearest guess.

  2. 2

    Clear it

The jetter scours walls clean with water pressure; the electric eel cuts the hard, root-bound lumps the jetter cannot shift.

  3. 3

    Prove it

The camera runs again after the clear, and you watch the entire line carry flow before we pack up.

A pipe locator marks the line's depth and path where an inspection needs to reach beyond the house.

Hamilton Drain Services

The drain work splits into six kinds of job, each with its own page:

See inside the line first

Footage of the pipe before anyone digs or clears, with the blockage, the cracks and the root entry points all on screen. CCTV drain inspection

Strip the pipe walls clean

High-pressure water scours grease, sludge and soft root growth off the walls without chemicals. High-pressure drain jetting

When every fixture gurgles at once

Main-line chokes bring sewage to the lowest point in the house and need heavier gear. Blocked sewer clearing

Rain with nowhere to go

Stormwater pits, downpipes and grated drains that top out when a storm arrives on flat ground. Stormwater drain unblocking

A repair without the trench

A cracked or root-cut line gets a new liner inside the old pipe, no digging up the yard. No-dig pipe relining

Roots already inside the pipe

The mass gets cut out and the entry points located, so the clear holds longer than a season. Tree root removal

What Sets the Price of a Drain Clear?

The pipe itself sets the figure.

  • Pipe material Earthenware, galvanised, PVC and polybutylene each take different gear and different fittings.
  • Where the blockage sits A choke reached from a yard trap is quicker work than one under a concrete driveway.
  • How far in the fault runs A blockage at the boundary inspection point is a different job to one mid-run.
  • After-hours A Sunday or late-night clear carries its own rate, and you hear it first.

The Floodplain Under The Streets

Low ground does half the damage here

Area rainfall averages sit around 1,091mm a year, and this low ground drains to Throsby and Styx Creek, so every stormwater line works harder than its size suggests. A serious storm can spill the pits and grated drains in the low streets before the creeks catch up, and the overflow tends to show up in laundries and floor wastes first.

Old pipes and wet ground compound each other

The cottages along Gordon Avenue and Cleary Street carry earthenware runs that crack with age, and flat ground lets silt settle into the broken sections. Over on the dining strip, the kitchens around The Kent Hotel feed grease into the same ageing lines. When roots, silt and fat share one pipe, the blockage is only a matter of time.

Jobs we point somewhere else

When we're not the right call: a blockage in the street main sits with the water authority, so the fix starts with a call to them, not a quote from us for a pipe that is not yours. A lift pump or switchboard problem goes to an electrician first. A cold shower is not a drain fault at all; it starts on the hot water page, and gas faults sit with gas fitting.

From Your Call To A Clear Line

  1. 01

    Ring or send the form

Call (02) 4063 1232 or use the form to explain the fault. We ask enough to bring the right equipment the first time.

  2. 02

    A fixed price first

A plumber inspects the job and names a fixed figure up front. Nothing gets started until you give the go-ahead.

  3. 03

    Cleared and camera-checked

The jetter or eel clears the line, then the camera runs the full length so you see flow restored on screen.

  4. 04

    Covered for a year

Every job carries our 365-day warranty on all work. If something we did isn't right, ring the same number.

Urgent blockages, sewage indoors and floodwater moving through a house belong on the emergency plumber page, where the after-hours work is set out.

Drain Questions Locals Ask

Is my blockage the sewer main or just one drain?

If every fixture slows at once, the gurgling pan, the shower, the floor waste, the problem sits in the main line. If only the kitchen sink backs up, it is usually the branch. A camera run settles it either way, because guessing means clearing the wrong pipe and paying for it twice.

Do you clear drains with chemicals?

No. A jetter strips the pipe walls with high-pressure water and an electric eel cuts hard blockages mechanically, while chemicals only shift a problem along and can harm old earthenware. We clear with gear, then show you the result on camera.

What does the camera check actually show?

Footage of the whole line, inside and out of reach: where roots enter, where a joint has dropped, where grease has narrowed the pipe. We run the camera before the clear to find the fault and again afterwards to confirm every metre holds flow.

Why do the older cottages block more than new builds?

New construction runs PVC, which is smooth and joint-light. A cottage from the township era runs earthenware laid in short segments, and every joint is a spot where a root hair can enter and a crack can catch paper. Older lines simply have more places to fail.
