If You Smell Gas, Do This First

Gas is not a wait-and-see problem. Get out, then get on the phone.

  • Turn the gas off at the meter if it's safe to reach
  • Leave every switch and plug alone, since a spark can ignite the gas
  • Get people and pets clear of the building
  • Ring (02) 4063 1232, and the gas network's emergency line, from outside

We trace the leak, fix it and pressure-test the line before it goes back into service. For the full range of gas work, see our gas fitting hub.

How Do You Find a Gas Leak?

Detection first, excavation last. Most leaks sit at joints, appliance connections or old fittings, and the right instruments find them without a shovel.

  1. 1

    Sniff and trace

An electronic gas detector sweeps the line and pinpoints where the concentration peaks.

  2. 2

    Pressure test

We isolate the line and watch the gauge. A drop tells us the leak is real and roughly how big.

  3. 3

    Locate and expose

A pipe locator marks the run's depth and position, so we open one small access point instead of a trench.

  4. 4

    Repair and retest

The joint, fitting or section gets fixed, then the line is pressure-tested again before we relight your appliances.

The same instruments cover gas and water, so if the smell turns out to be something else, our water leak detection service takes over.

What Drives the Price?

Where the leak hides decides most of the job.

"Communication was excellent, the quote was clear, and the work was completed promptly." Lily

It costs nothing to get us out to your door (excluding after-hours).

  • Where the fault sits A leak at an appliance connection is a quick fix; one under a slab or behind a wall takes longer to reach.
  • Line age and condition Older pipework can need a length renewed rather than a single joint resealed.
  • Access A meter on a side fence is easy; a run through an old cottage's internal plumbing is not.
  • After-hours timing Nights and weekends run on a different rate, named before you book.

Why Gas Lines Here Leak

Old lines, old joints, and a dining strip that runs on gas. Much of the housing dates to the township era, and brick and weatherboard cottages built before 1940 often carry gas lines put in generations back. Joints corrode, fittings work loose with ground movement, and a line that has sat quiet all summer gets its first real workout when the heating season starts. We pressure-test those runs before connecting anything new, because a modern appliance on a tired line is a leak waiting for a date.

The other end of the problem is commercial. Restaurant kitchens around the Beaumont Street precinct run flat out through the warmer months' festival and dining trade, and a gas fault in a busy kitchen is not a fault that waits. Commercial leaks get the same licensed gas fitter and the same pricing rules as a house call.

When We're Not the Right Call

A leak inside a gas appliance still under manufacturer warranty belongs with the supplier or the manufacturer's own service agent. And if you smell gas and cannot reach us, the gas network's emergency line is the number to ring first.

Gas Leak Questions From Hamilton Homes

What should I do first if I smell gas?

Close the meter tap if you can get to it safely, leave the doors open behind you, and keep everyone clear of the building. Don't touch switches or anything that could spark. Then ring (02) 4063 1232 and the gas network's own emergency line from outside, and we take it from there.

Can you find a leak without digging up the yard?

Yes. An electronic detector traces the line and shows where the concentration peaks, and a pressure test confirms the line is actually losing gas. Most faults sit at a joint or an appliance connection, so the repair is usually small and localised.

Are older cottages more likely to develop gas leaks?

Age plays a part. Plenty of pre-war homes here still carry their original gas pipework, and joints loosen and fittings corrode over time. A pressure test before the heating season, or before a new appliance goes in, catches most of it early.

Do you repair the leak as well as find it?

We do. Once the detector and the pressure test show where the fault sits, we price the repair before touching it, then fix it. Every job is done by a licensed gas fitter and carries our 365-day warranty on all work.
